John Lennon's Long-Rumoured School Desk Unearthed, Now on Display in Liverpool

A newly found PA note backs the account that the headmaster ordered the desk into storage in the 1960s.

Overview

  • The Liverpool Beatles Museum has added the desk to an exhibit with the Quarry Bank enrolment ledger signed by Mimi Smith, plus period uniforms and school signs.
  • Staff at Quarry Bank, now Calderstones School, say they recovered the piece from an attic storage area after forcing access to the locked room.
  • Teacher Tom Barry reports that headmaster Bill Pobjoy instructed caretaker “Yozzer” in 1963–64 to remove the desk from a classroom and hide it.
  • The lift-up desk remains locked, and staff say they have not found the rumored carved signature.
  • Calderstones is offering guided visits for fans that include on-site locations linked to Lennon and the Quarrymen, such as the stage where he performed.
