John Brooks Fined for Stealing Luggage From Breastfeeding Mother at Gatwick

The court ordered compensation and repair costs after prosecutors called the theft opportunistic.

Overview

  • Brooks, 52, pleaded guilty at Crawley Magistrates Court to theft and criminal damage over the Oct. 30 incident in the South Terminal.
  • Magistrates imposed a £388.30 fine, £300 compensation to the victim, and £88.30 to cover a bent security barrier.
  • Prosecutors said he appeared drunk, took a suitcase and a child’s backpack from outside a baby care room, and forced his way under a car park barrier using his head.
  • Court records show 37 previous convictions for 72 offences, including 42 related to theft.
  • The victim reported ongoing distress and sleep loss, and Gatwick said baby-care facilities are clearly signposted and designed to accommodate passengers with luggage trolleys.
