Joan Manuel Serrat Awarded Honorary Doctorate by University of Guadalajara at FIL

The honor recognizes a humanist body of songs rooted in a decades‑long bond with Mexico.

Overview

  • Serrat received the Doctorado Honoris Causa at UdeG’s Paraninfo Enrique Díaz de León, with Rector Karla Planter presenting the medal during the 39th Guadalajara International Book Fair.
  • UdeG’s council cited his profoundly humanist work and commitment to memory, dignity and critical thought in granting the distinction.
  • In his remarks, he said he hopes the Mexico of books will one day prevail over the Mexico of arms, expressing faith in culture’s power over violence.
  • At a FIL talk a day earlier, he briefly left the stage due to loud shouting outside the overflowing venue, then returned to continue the conversation moderated by writer Benito Taibo.
  • Coverage also highlighted Serrat’s critiques of the rise of right‑wing politics and Europe’s treatment of migrants, as well as the release of Jordi Soler’s book “Y uno se cree” (Alfaguara, 2025) about their creative friendship.
