JMA Warns of Violent Winds, Blizzard Conditions and High Waves Through Jan. 12

A rapidly deepening low plus a surge of cold air is set to lock in a strong winter pattern across Japan through the holiday period.

Overview

  • The Japan Meteorological Agency urges caution for violent winds, blizzards and high waves mainly along Japan Sea coasts and in northern regions from Jan. 10 to Jan. 12.
  • Fukuoka’s coastal waters and Hibikinada are forecast to see very strong westerlies from late morning Jan. 10 through the morning of Jan. 11 with maximum sustained winds near 20 m/s and gusts around 30 m/s.
  • Fukuoka’s 24‑hour snowfall from 6 p.m. Jan. 10 to 6 p.m. Jan. 11 is projected to reach about 10 cm in mountain areas and about 3 cm on plains.
  • Advisories highlight risks of transport disruption from snow and road icing, reduced visibility, high seas for maritime operations and possible damage to agricultural facilities.
  • Okinawa is expected to stay mostly sunny on Jan. 10, then turn cloudier on Jan. 11 with stronger north to northwest winds and rougher seas with higher waves.
