JMA Expects Ogasawara Depression to Strengthen Into Typhoon, Issues Island Warnings

Okinawa stays mostly sunny under a Pacific high with isolated thunderstorms tied to distant Typhoon No. 21.

Overview

  • Japan’s Meteorological Agency said on Oct. 4 a tropical depression near the Ogasawara Islands is forecast to become a typhoon and track west.
  • Ogasawara was advised to watch for strong winds, high waves with swells, and sudden heavy rain through Oct. 6.
  • Okinawa remains largely fair from Oct. 4–6 under high pressure, with brief showers and localized thunderstorms focused over the Miyako and Sakishima islands on Oct. 4.
  • Marine conditions include swells and somewhat higher waves reported around Sakishima on Oct. 4, shifting to somewhat higher waves around the Daito islands on Oct. 5.
  • Typhoon No. 21 remains east of the Philippines and is moving west-northwest, supplying moist air that is triggering intermittent showers in parts of Okinawa.
