JLR Enters MoD Light Vehicle Race With Defender Wolf Series II

The launch positions a British-engineered Defender as a contender to replace the retiring Series I Land Rover.

Overview

  • Jaguar Land Rover revealed the Defender Wolf Series II on Friday and said it has formally entered the UK Ministry of Defence Light Mobility Vehicle competition.
  • JLR also created a new Defender Defence Division and will show four role variants—tactical, general mobility, ambulance and utility—at the British Army DVD event on 16–17 September 2026.
  • The company says the Wolf Series II is built on its D7x monocoque architecture, underwent more than 62,000 engineering sign-off tests and passed its ‘Extreme Event’ validation at MoD test facilities.
  • The bid comes as the MoD seeks to replace about 6,000 Series I Land Rovers before 2030 and faces rival proposals from Ineos, Rheinmetall, GM Defense/BAE, General Dynamics, Babcock and smaller UK firms.
  • JLR highlights British design and a Wolverhampton-built engine to press a sovereign-supply case, but civilian Defender assembly in Nitra, Slovakia, and independent MoD evaluation mean a final procurement decision is still pending.
