JLN Stadium Blocks Re-Entry of Sterilised Stray Dogs After Bite Incidents

Animal groups cite Supreme Court rules requiring returned community dogs to stay in their original territory.

Overview

  • The Sports Authority of India issued an 8 October directive instructing stadium security to bar dogs and feeders from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium following recent bite cases during the World Para Athletics Championships.
  • On Thursday, Municipal Corporation of Delhi vehicles and an Animal India Trust van arrived to return sterilised, vaccinated dogs, but guards refused entry and the animals remained in vans for hours at Gate No. 10.
  • Activists allege the refusal violates an August Supreme Court direction and Animal Birth Control Rules that call for healthy community dogs to be returned to their original locations.
  • SAI says MCD has brought the dogs back to areas around the complex and that it requested 4–5 feeding points outside the boundary, while also alleging some individuals gatecrashed and manhandled guards.
  • An MCD official said about 32 dogs were picked up from in and around the venue and later released near the stadium, following earlier bite reports involving two visiting coaches and a security guard who were declared out of danger.
