J&K Police Attach Ex-Bar Chief Mian Qayoom’s Srinagar Home Under UAPA

Police cite a 2009 separatism case as the legal basis.

Overview

  • DGP Nalin Prabhat ordered the attachment on November 12 following prior approval by Police Headquarters Jammu on November 2 under Order No. 4340.
  • The two-storey house and land measuring 2 Kanals, 1 Marla, and 90 sq ft at Bulbul Bagh, Barzulla, were frozen as alleged proceeds of terrorism under Sections 2(g) and 25 of the UAPA.
  • The action is linked to FIR No. 157/2009 at PS Shaheed Gunj concerning an alleged anti-India seminar at Hotel Jahangir where police say Qayoom and others advocated secession.
  • Investigators report a court-sanctioned search at Qayoom’s residence recovered banned literature, Hizbul Mujahideen letterheads and seal impressions, and a letter attributed to Syed Salahuddin, prompting the addition of UAPA Sections 38 and 39.
  • Qayoom remains detained over his alleged role in the 2020 killing of lawyer Babar Qadri after his June 25, 2024 arrest, with the J&K High Court dismissing his challenges in February 2025.
