J&K Mandates Strict FSSAI Compliance for Frozen Meat After Rotten-Meat Seizures

The public notice turns a series of raids into enforceable standards that tighten cold‑chain controls across the meat supply chain.

Since the beginning of August, Kashmir has been rattled by a series of seizures and confiscation of hundreds of kilograms of rotten, unsafe or stale meat or its products meant to be distributed to various eateries of the valley. (File)

Overview

  • FDA Commissioner Smita Sethi ordered all food businesses, including e‑commerce platforms, to follow FSSAI rules for handling, storage, packaging and sale of frozen meat and poultry.
  • Frozen products must be kept at −18°C or lower with a 12‑month use limit, while chilled meat at 0–4°C is allowed only for two to four days before consumption.
  • Packages must display full FSSAI‑mandated labeling, including license number, batch details, storage conditions and the non‑vegetarian symbol, with unlabeled packaged items prohibited.
  • E‑commerce sales must deliver items with at least 30% shelf life remaining or a minimum 45 days before expiry, show actual product images and provide all mandatory information, using food‑grade packaging.
  • Penalties include seizure of stock, fines up to Rs 5 lakh for sub‑standard food and up to Rs 10 lakh for operating without a license, with unsafe‑food offences punishable by imprisonment up to six years; the High Court has also sought a prompt government response on the case.
