J&K Details Roadmap to Almost Double Hydropower by 2030–31

A stalled 40 MW project underscores execution risks tied to high tariffs.

Overview

  • Officials told the Legislative Assembly that 32 operational hydropower projects currently provide 3,540.15 MW across the Union Territory.
  • The plan targets 3,704.5 MW of new capacity from eight proposed and six under‑construction projects scheduled between 2026–27 and 2030–31.
  • Yearwise additions are projected at 1,685.7 MW in 2026–27, 577.5 MW in 2027–28, 1,370 MW in 2029–30 and 141 MW in 2030–31, taking total installed capacity to about 7,314.85 MW.
  • Prominent projects in the pipeline include Pakaldul (1,000 MW), Ratle (850 MW), Kiru (624 MW), Kwar (540 MW), Uri‑I Stage‑II (240 MW), Dulhasti‑I (260 MW), New Ganderbal (93 MW) and Lower Kalnai (48 MW).
  • The 40 MW Ans (Nandoli) project remains stalled after a 2025 default notice to the IPP, which has sought exit citing a ₹7.30/kWh levelized tariff; the matter is under JKPDCL review, even as the CM notes all Jammu division villages are electrified with some new habitations pending under central schemes.
