J&K Anti-Corruption Bureau Nabs Patwari, Police Head Constable Flees After Bribe Trap

Discreet verifications of citizen complaints led the ACB to catch a Patwari for demanding Rs 5,000, prompting pursuit of a police head constable who fled after accepting Rs 15,000

A bureau spokesperson said the accused is absconding and a search is on to apprehend him. (HT File)

Overview

  • ACB lodged an FIR under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act after verifying a complaint that Patwari Mohd. Jameel solicited a Rs 5,000 bribe for attested land records in Village Dhara
  • On June 13, a trap team caught Jameel red-handed in Halqa Dhara, tehsil Mandi, and he was immediately arrested before investigators searched his Poonch residence
  • The following day, ACB operatives set up a sting on Head Constable Roshan Din of Kathua police for demanding Rs 25,000—later negotiated to Rs 15,000—to delete a complainant’s name from a case
  • Din sensed the ACB presence, accepted the Rs 15,000 payment and fled the scene, discarding the tainted notes into bushes along the NHW near Palli
  • Investigators recovered the bribe money and continue probing both cases, with Din still at large as the bureau expands its crackdown
