Overview

  • Spaun rebounded from five front-nine bogeys and a 96-minute weather suspension to birdie his final two holes and seize the championship lead.
  • Oakmont’s narrow fairways and Stimpmeter-rated 15 greens were rendered even more punishing by heavy rain as only Spaun finished under par.
  • Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre led the field at 1-over 281 before Spaun’s closing putt secured the runner-up spot.
  • Viktor Hovland placed third at 2-over 282 while 54-hole leader Sam Burns and Adam Scott wilted under soggy conditions with closing rounds of 78 and 79.
  • The U.S. Open’s $21.5 million purse awarded Spaun a $4.3 million winner’s check for his breakthrough triumph.
