Jim Morrison Skis Everest’s Hornbein Couloir in First-Ever Descent

The descent serves as Morrison’s tribute to Hilaree Nelson, whose ashes he spread on Everest’s summit.

Overview

  • On Oct. 15, 2025, he linked the Hornbein and Japanese Couloirs from the summit and skied about 2,760 meters in 4 hours 5 minutes to Camp One near 20,000 feet.
  • Before setting off, he scattered Nelson’s ashes on the summit and dedicated the effort to her memory.
  • A 12-person summit team, including Sherpas and a camera crew led by Jimmy Chin for a National Geographic documentary, supported the ascent, but Morrison alone made the ski descent.
  • The successful push came after two failed seasons, with a 2023 permit delay and a 2024 avalanche injury in the rope-fixing team halting earlier attempts.
  • The line—rarely climbed since 1963 and last reported ascended in 1991—required a roughly 200-meter rappel on bare rock in what Morrison called “abominable” conditions.
