Jim Morrison Completes First Ski Descent of Everest’s Hornbein Couloir

A National Geographic film crew documented the third-try achievement on Everest’s rarely climbed north-face route.

Overview

  • Morrison began his ski from the 29,032-foot summit and reached Camp One in 4 hours 5 minutes after descending roughly 2,760 meters.
  • The descent followed a linkup of the Hornbein and Japanese Couloirs on the north face, marking the first successful ski of the Hornbein Couloir.
  • This was his third attempt after 2023 permitting problems in China and a 2024 avalanche that injured a Sherpa, and he ultimately summited with a 12-person team including Jimmy Chin before skiing the face solo.
  • Morrison dedicated the feat to his late partner Hilaree Nelson and spread her ashes on the summit before setting off.
  • Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin filmed the expedition for National Geographic’s Everest North (working title), with a theatrical release planned before it airs on National Geographic and Disney+.
