Jibon Singha Reemerges to Demand Separate Kamtapur State

The TMC has dismissed the video as a BJP-orchestrated election tactic

Overview

  • In a video released July 10 from an undisclosed location, the KLO chief accused Kolkata authorities of unconstitutional occupation and resource exploitation in Cooch Behar.
  • Singha alleged the Bengal government is facilitating Bangladeshi infiltration to reduce Koch Rajbanshis to a minority and unleashing political and police terror against indigenous communities.
  • He urged Koch Rajbanshis, Adivasis, Gorkhas, Nashya Sheikhs, Bengalis and other regional groups to unite above religious and caste lines for autonomy.
  • TMC spokesperson Partha Pratim Roy branded Singha a BJP stooge, saying his message resurfaces whenever the party faces a crisis in North Bengal.
  • The Kamtapur Liberation Organisation, formed by Rajbongshi students in 1995 and banned in 1997, seeks a multi-district state spanning north Bengal, lower Assam, Kishanganj in Bihar and Jhapa in Nepal.
