Jets Great Nick Mangold Publicly Seeks Kidney Donor as He Begins Dialysis

The seven-time Pro Bowler, diagnosed with a genetic kidney disease in 2006, is seeking a type O living donor after recent dialysis began.

Overview

  • Posting Tuesday, Mangold asked potential donors to register through Columbia University's transplant portal using his full name and birthdate (Nicholas Mangold, 1/13/1984).
  • He said no family members are able to donate and appealed to the Jets and Ohio State communities for a match with type O blood.
  • After a severe downturn over the summer, he was hospitalized in late August and is now undergoing outpatient dialysis three times weekly.
  • He told the New York Post he hopes for a living donor, is reportedly not on a transplant waitlist, and would have surgery at Columbia Presbyterian if a match is found.
  • The 41-year-old played 11 seasons for the Jets, earned seven Pro Bowl selections and two first-team All-Pro honors, and was inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor in 2022.
