JetBlue Reports Near-Miss With U.S. Air Force Tanker Off Curaçao

The airline says it has notified federal regulators, pledging cooperation.

Overview

  • JetBlue Flight 1112 from Curaçao to New York reported that a U.S. Air Force refueling tanker crossed its path at the same altitude, prompting the crew to halt their climb.
  • The pilot, in recorded communications with air traffic control, said the military aircraft’s transponder was not active and estimated the pass at roughly 2 to 5 miles.
  • The pilot also said the tanker proceeded toward Venezuelan airspace after the encounter.
  • JetBlue spokesman Derek Dombrowski said the incident was reported to federal authorities and the airline will participate in any investigation.
  • The Pentagon referred inquiries to the Air Force, which had not responded, as U.S. flights in the Caribbean have increased for drug interdiction operations.
