Jerry Adler, Veteran Actor of The Sopranos and The Good Wife, Dies at 96

His family announced the New York native’s death, capping a career that shifted from Broadway production to acclaimed screen roles.

  • Adler died on Aug. 23 at age 96, according to a family obituary, with friend Frank J. Reilly also sharing the news on X.
  • He was best known for portraying Herman “Hesh” Rabkin on HBO’s The Sopranos across the show’s run from 1999 to 2007.
  • Before acting, he spent decades behind the scenes on Broadway, including as stage manager of the original 1956 My Fair Lady, and he was a cousin of acting teacher Stella Adler.
  • He began appearing onscreen at 62 with a 1991 debut on Brooklyn Bridge and later had notable roles in The Good Wife/The Good Fight and Rescue Me, plus films such as Manhattan Murder Mystery and Synecdoche, New York.
  • He is survived by his wife, psychologist Joan Laxman, and was remembered by The Good Wife co-creator Robert King, who said a single planned appearance became years of work after a standout scene.
