JERA Becomes First Japanese Buyer to Sign Non-Binding LOI for Alaska LNG

The step follows a recent U.S.–Japan pledge to pursue Alaska LNG contracts.

Overview

  • JERA announced on Sept. 11 that it issued a Letter of Intent expressing interest in long-term LNG procurement from the proposed Alaska project.
  • Glenfarne said it signed the LOI on Sept. 10, with U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum attending the signing.
  • The LOI imposes no legal obligation, and JERA says it will continue gathering information and evaluating the project before making any commitment.
  • The plan envisions a roughly 1,300-kilometer pipeline from Alaska’s North Slope and exports to Asia in the early 2030s at an estimated cost of about $44 billion.
  • The interest aligns with the recent bilateral statement to pursue purchase contracts, even as uncertain pricing, large upfront costs, and design revisions keep feasibility in question; CPC and PTT have already signaled interest.
