Overview
- Hundreds lined a rain-soaked procession route in St. George on Jan. 1 as Holland was buried beside his wife, Patricia, in his hometown cemetery.
- A public funeral on Dec. 31 at the Salt Lake Tabernacle featured remarks from family, music by the Tabernacle Choir, and was presided over by Church President Dallin H. Oaks and conducted by Elder Quentin L. Cook.
- Oaks praised Holland as an “apostle of love and learning,” while his children recalled his compassion and resilience through 30 months of kidney failure, neuropathy, arthritis and breathing difficulties.
- Holland died Dec. 27 at age 85 from complications of kidney disease after serving as an apostle since 1994 and previously leading Brigham Young University from 1980 to 1989.
- The Quorum of the Twelve now has 11 members, with church precedent indicating Henry B. Eyring becomes quorum president, Dieter F. Uchtdorf serves as acting president, and a new apostle will be called in the months ahead.
