Jeffrey Gibson’s Block-Long Mural Begins Installation on Former Bloomingdale’s in Downtown SF

Private backers fund the high-visibility commission to draw people back to a struggling downtown.

Overview

  • The printed-vinyl artwork measures roughly 433 by 66 feet, wrapping the Mission Street facade between Fourth and Fifth streets at the San Francisco Centre.
  • The commission is presented by ICA San Francisco in partnership with the Yerba Buena Partnership and the San Francisco Downtown Development Corporation.
  • The piece will be fully unveiled on February 2 during Super Bowl LX festivities and is slated to remain in place for at least a year.
  • The design adapts stills from Gibson’s 2022 video “This Burning World,” fusing Indigenous-influenced patterning with a meditation on the natural world.
  • An eight-person crew is installing the mural using articulating lifts and a swing-stage scaffold, supported by a DDC revitalization effort that has raised about $40 million from donors including OpenAI, Amazon and Emerson Collective.
