Overview

  • In March, 27-year-old Beau Lyons attacked Shane Edwards at Mojo’s nightclub in Newport, slashing his left ear after spotting him dancing with Lyons’s girlfriend during a ‘mini bar crawl’.
  • Nightclub CCTV footage showed Lyons grab a glass and strike Edwards before throwing him into a table, prompting an emergency transfer to Grange University Hospital.
  • Doctors discovered a 5cm wound slicing through all layers of Edwards’s ear, exposing cartilage, splitting the ear in two and leading to repeated infections and hearing loss.
  • Judge Eugene Egan, noting that Lyons was under the influence of alcohol and cocaine, sentenced him to three years in prison after he pleaded guilty to wounding with intent and weapon possession.
  • In his victim personal statement, Edwards described severe anxiety, nightmares, sleep disturbances and plummeted confidence as he continues to struggle with lasting physical and psychological trauma.
