Jayalalithaa’s Niece Challenges Asset Confiscation in Supreme Court

J Deepa seeks return of confiscated properties, arguing criminal proceedings against the late Tamil Nadu CM were abated after her death.

J Deepa, niece of former Tamil Nadu CM J Jayalalithaa, has filed a petition in the Supreme Court to reclaim assets confiscated in a disproportionate assets case.
Deepa argues that the 2017 Supreme Court judgment abated all criminal proceedings against Jayalalithaa following her death in December 2016.
The Karnataka High Court and a Special Court recently upheld the confiscation and ordered the transfer of the assets to the Tamil Nadu government.
The petition claims that the confiscated properties should not carry the taint of corruption and must be returned to Jayalalithaa’s legal heirs.
Deepa has requested an interim stay on the Karnataka High Court and Special Court orders while the Supreme Court reviews the case.
