Jarange Sets Sept. 17 Deadline on Kunbi Certificates as OBC Groups Ready Protests and Court Fights

A new state GR invoking Hyderabad Gazetteer records to enable Kunbi certificates has set off parallel legal steps by Maratha groups alongside OBC objections.

Overview

  • Maratha quota leader Manoj Jarange demanded that issuance of Kunbi caste certificates begin before September 17 and warned of renewed action if the process stalls.
  • OBC organisations met in Mumbai to plan a Nagpur rally in the first week of October and said they will file legal challenges to the GR this week.
  • Jarange cautioned he would move to challenge the 1994 GR that set OBC reservation guidelines if leaders try to block the new order.
  • Rashtriya Chhava Sanghatan filed caveats in the Supreme Court and Bombay High Court to ensure Maratha representation before any stay on the GR.
  • NCP minister Chhagan Bhujbal said he will go to court against the GR, as Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reiterated that OBC quotas will not be reduced.
