Jarange Reaches Pune as Mumbai Police Clear One-Day Maratha Quota Protest for Aug. 29

Authorities are tightening protest rules to balance rights with Ganeshotsav security.

Overview

  • Bombay High Court barred any Azad Maidan demonstration without prior permission and suggested alternative sites such as Kharghar given festival policing demands.
  • Mumbai Police granted a single-day slot on Aug. 29 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. with a 5,000-person cap, only five protest vehicles, no morcha, and restrictions on children, pregnant women and seniors.
  • Jarange left Jalna and reached Shivneri in Pune district, vowing a peaceful agitation and an indefinite fast from Friday while calling the one-day limit an insult to the Maratha community.
  • The Chief Minister’s OSD asked Jarange to postpone the action; reports indicated a ministerial team would meet him near Shivneri, though Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil later said no decision on talks had been taken.
  • The state extended by six months the Justice (Retd.) Sandeep Shinde panel verifying MarathaKunbi records, and Jalna police allowed the march under 40 conditions on conduct and traffic.
