Jarange Launches Indefinite Hunger Strike at Mumbai’s Azad Maidan Over Maratha Quota

The state signalled readiness for talks through its cabinet panel under Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil.

Overview

  • Police permitted the protest only on August 29 from 9 am to 6 pm with a cap of 5,000 participants under new 2025 rules and court guidance.
  • Turnout far exceeded the limit, with police estimating up to nearly 40,000 supporters arriving as large convoys reached south Mumbai and crowds gathered near CSMT.
  • More than 1,500 city police were deployed with CRPF, RAF, CISF and MSF units, and key routes such as the Eastern Freeway and Sion–Panvel Highway were closed with diversions issued.
  • Jarange is demanding recognition of all Marathas as Kunbis for inclusion in the OBC category and a 10% quota, and he urged supporters to remain peaceful and not inconvenience residents.
  • A marcher identified as Satish Deshmukh from Beed reportedly died of a heart attack in Pune district while traveling with the entourage.
