Japan's PM Kishida Sends Letter to China's President Xi Jinping
Komeito Delegation and Chinese Officials Agree to Resume Dialogue Amid Strained Relations
- Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida sent a letter to Chinese President Xi Jinping via a delegation from Komeito, the junior coalition partner of Japan's ruling party.
- The contents of the letter have not been disclosed.
- The Komeito delegation, led by party leader Natsuo Yamaguchi, met with Cai Qi, head of the Secretariat of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.
- Yamaguchi and Cai agreed to work toward resuming dialogue between the CPC and the coalition of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and Komeito, which had been broken off in 2018.
- The meeting comes as Japan and China, Asia's two largest economies, seek to improve strained ties over issues such as Japan's release of treated radioactive water into the ocean, maritime territorial claims, China's detention of Japanese citizens, Taiwan, and export curbs.
