Japan’s Ishiba to Meet South Korea’s Lee in Busan on Sept. 30–Oct. 1

The outgoing prime minister plans his first South Korea trip days before a party vote to choose his successor.

  • TV Asahi, citing a Korean government official, reported that Shigeru Ishiba will meet President Lee Jae Myung during a two-day visit to Busan starting Sept. 30.

  • The trip would be Ishiba’s first to South Korea and likely his last as he has announced his resignation with a leadership race set for early October.
  • Lee and Ishiba agreed in Tokyo last month to strengthen security and economic cooperation with the United States in response to North Korea’s threats.
