Japan’s Food Exports Hit Record ¥1.701 Trillion in 2025 on U.S. Demand, China Rebound

Health-driven global interest in Japanese cuisine underpinned the surge.

Overview

  • Japan’s agricultural, forestry and fishery exports rose 12.8% in 2025 to ¥1.701 trillion, marking a 13th straight annual increase, according to MAFF.
  • Sales to the United States climbed 13.7% to ¥276.2 billion, retaining the top-destination slot on strong demand for green tea and beef despite tariffs introduced in April.
  • Exports to China increased 7.0% to ¥179.9 billion after a steep 2024 drop, though seafood curbs remain in place and shipments of those products have not recovered much.
  • By product, beef, rice, green tea and yellowtail reached record export values in 2025, with green tea exports doubling from the prior year.
  • The total fell short of the government’s ¥2 trillion target for 2025, and officials are advancing market diversification, including new channels for scallops and other seafood.
