Japan’s FDMA Orders First Airbus H160 for Kumamoto Disaster Response
Equipped with Helisat satellite links, the H160 is intended to deliver live aerial reconnaissance when ground communications are down.
Overview
- Airbus confirmed Thursday that Japan’s Fire and Disaster Management Agency signed for a single H160 to be based in Kumamoto to boost rapid disaster reconnaissance.
- The H160 will carry Helisat satellite technology to stream high-definition imagery directly to orbiting satellites so commanders can see affected areas even if ground networks are damaged.
- Airbus is developing custom snow landing gear so the H160 can operate safely in Japan’s deep-snow winter conditions.
- Airbus said its Kobe H160 centre of excellence will provide aftersales support as the type gains traction in Japan, where four H160s already serve law enforcement, news gathering and municipal firefighting roles.
- The planned H160 builds on Kumamoto’s long use of AS365 models and is aimed at speeding damage assessment and command decisions during major events such as a potential Nankai Trough megaquake.
