Japanese Training Squadron to Dock in Buenos Aires With Public Tours and Cultural Events

Due Sunday morning, the JMSDF flotilla opens its decks for free public tours in the Dársena Norte; at the Jardín Japonés it stages Japanese cultural performances to reinforce practical training alongside diplomatic outreach.

Overview

  • The JS Kashima and JS Shimakaze are set to arrive Sunday as part of the 75th JMSDF training voyage carrying roughly 570 personnel including about 200 newly graduated junior officers.
  • On Tuesday 19 August, both ships will welcome free public visits at the Dársena Norte of the Apostadero Naval between 9:30–12:00 and 14:00–17:30 without prior accreditation.
  • A cultural showcase at the Jardín Japonés on Sunday 17 August will feature the ships' symphonic band, wadaiko drums and demonstrations of judo, kendo and iaido.
  • Commissioned in 1995, the JS Kashima is equipped with classrooms, laboratories and light defensive armament for at-sea officer instruction while the 1988-built JS Shimakaze retains its full complement of combat systems despite its 2021 reclassification.
  • The weeklong port call forms part of a 153-day itinerary through 11 ports designed to deepen Japan-Argentina naval ties rooted in a 1904 cruiser transfer and enhance practical seamanship training.
