Japanese Automakers Report Mixed August as Overseas Gains Offset Japan Slump

Toyota cut its annual outlook after new U.S. car tariffs.

  • - Toyota said August global sales rose just over 1% to 900,598 units, with a record month abroad on nearly 4% growth and a drop of more than 10% in Japan; Toyota and Lexus sales climbed nearly 14% in the U.S.
  • - Nissan posted August global production of 237,941 units (+0.8% year on year) and global sales of 251,081 (+2.8%), with U.S. sales up 12.7%, China up 19.4% and exports from Japan up 15.0%.
  • - Honda recorded worldwide production of 267,005 units (87.0% of the year-earlier level), marking a 13th straight monthly decline, while exports from Japan rose to 7,307 units (126.9% year on year).
  • - Mazda’s domestic production increased 4.3% to 48,903 units even as global output slipped 1.7% to 84,754; Japan sales edged down 0.5% in August.
  • - Mitsubishi reported total production of 59,372 units (89.1% year on year) with a second consecutive domestic output decline and exports down 13.8% to 16,075 units.
