Japan Signs Contract for Ukrainian SkyFall Interceptor Drones

Tokyo is moving to rapidly field foreign-built counter-drone systems as it advances a separate domestic mass-production program.

Overview

  • Japan’s defence minister said on Oct. 10 that the Ministry of Defense has signed a contract to buy interceptor drones from Ukraine’s SkyFall and is working to secure quick delivery.
  • The government and SkyFall have declined to disclose which model was ordered, how many drones are included, the contract value or the delivery schedule.
  • SkyFall makes the P1-SUN family of interceptors and unveiled the higher-speed JetKiller in July, and the company has released footage it says shows a JetKiller destroying a Russian Geran-5 jet-powered drone.
  • Tokyo’s foreign order complements a domestic program run by the Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Agency that awarded a mass-production contract for the Terra B1 interceptor to Terra Drone on Aug. 25.
  • The deal highlights growing cross-border procurement of Ukrainian drone tech and raises near-term questions about delivery timing, independent verification of SkyFall’s production and combat claims, and how the new systems will be integrated and tested for use by Japanese forces.
