Japan Ships First Seafood to China Since Ban With Hokkaido Scallops

The limited restart follows Chinese easing of a 2023 embargo linked to Fukushima wastewater reviews by international regulators.

Overview

  • Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara said 6 metric tons of Hokkaido scallops were shipped on Nov. 5, marking the first export since August 2023.
  • Japan said 600 kilograms of salted sea cucumbers are slated to follow on Nov. 10, with the batch sourced from Aomori Prefecture.
  • China still blocks seafood from Fukushima and nine neighboring prefectures under longstanding post-2011 restrictions.
  • Only three Japanese facilities have been cleared to export so far, and many more await Chinese registration and radiation certification.
  • Tokyo is pressing Beijing to lift the remaining curbs and to restart imports of Japanese beef.
