Japan Schedules U.S. Carrier Landing Practice at Iwakuni for Sept. 17–26

The venue shift follows volcanic activity at Iwo Jima.

Overview

  • The Ministry of Defense’s ChugokuShikoku Defense Bureau formally notified Yamaguchi Prefecture and Iwakuni City that Field Carrier Landing Practice will take place at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni.
  • Training is slated for weekdays only and includes night landings from 6:45 p.m. to 9:45 p.m.
  • F-35C and F/A-18E aircraft are expected to participate, according to the notification.
  • Iwakuni Mayor Yoshihiko Fukuda opposes the plan and will travel to Tokyo on Sept. 16 to request cancellation.
  • Should the drills proceed, they would be the first FCLP at Iwakuni since September 2000, with both city and prefectural officials lodging objections.
