Japan Releases First National Five-Year Cancer Survival Rates

The figures create an official baseline for monitoring outcomes using the National Cancer Registry.

  • Among adults aged 15–99, prostate cancer showed the highest five-year survival at 92.1%, while pancreatic cancer was lowest at 11.8%.
  • Other adult survival rates included 88.0% for breast, 67.8% for colon, 64.0% for stomach, and 37.7% for lung cancer.
  • For children under 15, five-year survival was 95.7% for lymphoma, 82.2% for leukemia, and 60.8% for central nervous system tumors.
  • The ministry also reported cancer diagnoses totaling 990,930 in 2022 and 993,469 in 2023, with levels largely stable after a temporary dip around 2020.
