Japan Protests After Chinese Jets Lock Radar on F-15s Near Okinawa

Officials link the locks to Liaoning flight drills near Okinawa in a sign of strains after Japan's Taiwan remarks.

Overview

  • Japan says J-15s from the carrier Liaoning intermittently locked radar on Air Self-Defense Force F-15s at about 4:32 p.m. and 6:37 p.m. local time on Dec. 6.
  • Self-Defense Forces scrambled aircraft to monitor the carrier group, and authorities reported no airspace violation, injuries, or damage.
  • Tokyo lodged a strong protest and called the actions dangerous and extremely regrettable, urging Beijing to prevent a recurrence.
  • The Liaoning transited between Okinawa and Miyako with three destroyers before conducting flight operations about 270 km west of Okidaito Island.
  • Kyodo and AP reported it is believed to be the first publicly reported aircraft-to-aircraft radar lock between the two militaries.
