A map shows the 990-mile range of Japan's V-22 Osprey fleet stationed at JGSDF Camp Saga in the southwestern Saga prefecture.

Overview

  • All 17 GSDF V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft have been relocated from Camp Kisarazu in Chiba to their permanent base at Camp Saga in Saga Prefecture.
  • The Defense Ministry says stationing the tilt-rotors at Saga will enhance island defense capabilities and strengthen Japan’s deterrence and rapid-response capacity.
  • Based on Kyushu, the aircraft can reach the Nansei Islands more quickly, cutting deployment times for regional contingencies and medical evacuations.
  • The V-22’s hybrid helicopter-airplane design offers vertical takeoff with fixed-wing speed, enabling swift troop transport and disaster relief operations.
  • The fleet will integrate with the GSDF’s Amphibious Rapid Deployment Brigade to support amphibious operations and island defense missions.
