Japan Moves to Suspend Japan Post’s Light Vans at About 100 Offices Over Improper Driver Checks

The transport ministry issued administrative notices as a first wave that could expand to roughly 2,000 locations by October.

Overview

  • MLIT notified Japan Post on September 3 that around 100 post offices face administrative suspension of light cargo vans for failures in legally required roll‑calls and record keeping.
  • Japan Post said it received the notices and pledged to keep delivering mail and parcels, with expanded subcontracting expected to cover gaps.
  • Under the Motor Truck Transportation Business Act, the ministry will hear the company’s views before formalizing sanctions in October.
  • Suspensions will be applied office by office using a day‑car allocation of up to 160 day‑cars, and no more than half of an office’s vehicles can be sidelined at a time.
  • The new action follows June penalties that canceled permits for about 2,500 larger vehicles for five years, and potential suspensions for light vans could ultimately reach about 2,000 offices nationwide.
