Japan Keeps Small-Vessel Squid Suspension, Redirects 2,485 Tons to Six Prefectures

The Fisheries Agency tapped its national reserve after a policy council subcommittee endorsed reallocations that link limited access to cooperation in resource surveys.

Overview

  • The agency decided not to add TAC for 5–30 ton vessels, leaving the nationwide catch suspension effectively in place through March 2026.
  • Hokkaido receives 1,049 tons, Nagasaki 503 tons, Yamagata 96 tons, and Hyogo, Tottori, and Yamaguchi 46 tons each from the reserve.
  • Small squid boats registered in those six prefectures may resume limited operations under governor permits if they participate in resource surveys.
  • The overall TAC remains unchanged as the government reallocates quota from the national reserve rather than expanding total limits.
  • The plan was presented by the Fisheries Agency and accepted by a Fisheries Policy Council subcommittee, with additional reserve tonnage also assigned to offshore bottom trawl and minister-permitted squid fishing.
