Japan Issues Blizzard Warnings as Dual Lows Drive Heavy Snow Through Dec. 26

A strong winter pressure pattern with upper-level cold air will intensify sea-effect snow along the Japan Sea coast.

Overview

  • The Japan Meteorological Agency warns of very strong winds and whiteout conditions from northern to western Japan, with the Japan Sea side and mountain areas most at risk.
  • Forecast snowfall through 6 a.m. on Dec. 26 reaches about 30 cm in Kinki, 25 cm in Chugoku, and 20 cm in northern Kyushu.
  • In the subsequent 24 hours, accumulations are forecast to reach roughly 70 cm in parts of Tohoku, Hokuriku, and Tokai, 50 cm in Kanto-Koshin, and 40 cm in Kinki and Chugoku.
  • One low-pressure system near Sanriku is expected to deepen and move toward the Okhotsk Sea as a second low rapidly intensifies over the western Japan Sea and tracks east.
  • Officials caution that blizzard conditions could disrupt transportation and urge residents to stay alert for hazardous travel and changing advisories.
