Japan Fuel Prices Ease as Power Bills Split, City Gas Drops

Utilities' fuel mixes are driving a split in household energy bills.

Overview

  • National average regular gasoline fell to ¥173.50 per liter as of Oct. 27, down ¥1 week over week and marking a third straight decline under the ¥10-per-liter government subsidy.
  • Diesel slipped to ¥153.70 per liter and kerosene to ¥2,210 per 18 liters, both lower than the previous week.
  • For November usage billed in December, six of the ten major power utilities will raise standard household rates by about ¥3–16, Tohoku and Kansai stay flat, and Tokyo and Chubu post cuts of ¥13 and ¥19.
  • Four major city-gas companies will reduce November charges by roughly ¥21–27, reflecting lower LNG import costs.
  • Gasoline prices fell in 44 prefectures, were unchanged in one and rose in two, with Aichi the lowest at ¥167.30 per liter and Kagoshima the highest at ¥184.60; standard electricity bills are highest in Hokkaido (¥9,351) and lowest in parts of Kyushu (¥7,454).
