Japan Drug Seizures Top 2,000 Kilograms in First Half of 2025 as Cannabis Drives Record Total

The finance ministry says a June maritime haul pushed the tally to a new high.

  • Customs reported 2,073 kilograms of illicit drugs seized in January through June, the first half-year total to surpass two tonnes.
  • Cannabis seizures climbed to 1,332 kilograms, roughly 8.1 times a year earlier, and accounted for more than 60% of the total by weight.
  • Methamphetamine trafficking receded sharply, with 55 cases and about 285 kilograms seized, down 35% and 73% year on year.
  • Cocaine cases rose to 51 even as seized weight fell to about 134 kilograms, while MDMA cases declined to 40 as weight increased to about 120 kilograms.
  • Smuggling by airline passengers increased to 177 cases, use of international mail fell to 264 cases, and overall drug-related cases rose 6% to 531.
