Japan Braces for Major Winter Storm With Heavy Snow and Powerful Winds Jan. 11–12

The JMA warns that a rapidly deepening low plus a surge of cold air will drive blizzard conditions with travel disruption.

Overview

  • A rapidly developing low with a frontal boundary is expected to enter the northern Sea of Japan on Jan. 10 before cold air spreads south to the Pacific side through Jan. 12.
  • Through noon Jan. 11, 24-hour snowfall could reach about 50 cm in Tohoku and around 30 cm in Hokkaido, Hokuriku, Tokai, Kinki, and Chugoku.
  • Through noon Jan. 12, the following 24 hours may bring about 100 cm in Tohoku, 70 cm in Hokuriku, and about 50 cm in Hokkaido, Kanto–Koshin, Tokai, and Kinki.
  • Warning-level snowfall is forecast for Tohoku, with measurable accumulation possible on typically low-snow Pacific-side lowlands in western Japan.
  • The Japan Meteorological Agency urges vigilance for blizzards, strong gusts, and transport disruption during the three-day holiday period.
