Nearly 5 Million Californians to Receive Up to $1,751 in Assistance

  • January payments for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), known as CalFresh in California, are set to be sent out in three days, with payments worth up to $1,751 for low-income households.
  • Payments will be distributed to qualified low-income households in California from the first of the month and end on Jan. 10, 2024, depending on a recipient's case number.
  • In New Mexico, SNAP payments will also begin in three days, with the distribution period ending on the 20th of the month. The exact day of distribution is based on the last two digits of a recipient's Social Security number.
  • SNAP benefits are loaded onto an electronic benefits transfer card every month, which recipients can use at grocery stores to purchase eligible products.
  • Approximately 13% of California's population, nearly 5 million Californians, receive CalFresh assistance each month.
