Janja Represents Brazil at FAO Forum as Paris Trip Authorized and Decree Faces Pushback

The moves follow an August decree expanding the presidential office to support her official activities.

Overview

  • Brazil’s first lady is taking part in the FAO World Food Forum in Rome from Oct. 14–17, with about 10 engagements focused on climate resilience, youth and women in food systems.
  • Her agenda at the forum concludes on Oct. 17 with the closing session, where she is expected to deliver remarks.
  • Vice President Geraldo Alckmin signed the Oct. 13 authorization for her Oct. 19–21 Paris visit, the official notice states there will be no cost to public coffers, and organizers confirmed her role in the opening and first panel at the Sorbonne describing her as a special envoy for women at COP30.
  • Decree No. 12,604/2025, published in August, expanded the Presidential Personal Office to provide staff, commissioned posts and a budget to support the first lady’s projects and official travel.
  • Opposition deputies filed measures to overturn or scrutinize the decree, with Zucco contesting its legality, Luiz Phillipe de Orleans e Bragança seeking details on staffing and expenses, and Sóstenes Cavalcante proposing to suspend the rule.
