Jan. 6 Rioter Matthew Krol Sentenced to Over 4 Years in Prison

Krol, a self-professed militia leader, assaulted officers with a stolen baton during the Capitol insurrection.

  • Matthew Krol, a 64-year-old Michigan man, has been sentenced to 51 months in prison for his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.
  • Krol pleaded guilty to one felony count of 'assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers using a dangerous weapon' in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C.
  • Krol stole an officer's baton during the riot and struck at least three police officers with it, seriously injuring one officer's right hand.
  • Krol is the 'self-professed executive officer' of the Genesee County, Mich., Volunteer Militia and an associate of the Wolverine Watchmen, an extremist group whose members were convicted in the plot to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
  • More than 1,230 people have been charged in connection to the Jan. 6, 2021, rioting.
