Jammu Restores Most Power Within 48 Hours After Floods Cripple Grid

Temporary measures by nonstop crews stabilized supply; permanent repairs will take months.

Overview

  • Load rebounded from 299 MW on August 26 to 960 MW by the evening of August 28, reaching 92% of normal demand, according to the Power Development Department.
  • Officials reported unprecedented infrastructure damage, with several transmission towers down, only 364 of 1,349 feeders working at the low point, and nearly 19,000 distribution transformers affected.
  • Emergency Restoration Systems replaced collapsed towers within a day and high‑strength cranes helped restring conductors on damaged corridors such as the 220 kV Barn–Kishanpur line near Nagrota.
  • The 900 MW Baglihar hydropower plant returned to service about 60 hours after a shutdown caused by dangerously high silt in the Chenab, with all units synchronized by August 29.
  • Restoration prioritized essential services including defence, water supply and major hospitals, and drew coordinated support from NHPC, PGCIL, NHAI, police and J&K power corporations.
