Jammu Protest Over Vaishno Devi Medical College Admissions Escalates at Lok Bhavan

Officials reiterate that the list was filled on NEET merit and cannot be altered on religious grounds.

Overview

  • Hundreds rallied outside Jammu’s Lok Bhavan, burned an effigy of Lt Governor Manoj Sinha, and blocked the road for up to two hours while attempting to enter the complex.
  • J&K BJP women’s wing members and prominent trade leaders joined the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Sangharsh Samiti demonstration demanding cancellation of the MBBS list.
  • Protest leaders called for reserving seats exclusively for Hindu students at SMVDIME and for transferring selected Muslim candidates to other colleges.
  • The National Medical Commission said it rejected a proposal to move all seats to the All India Quota, and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah defended merit-only admissions under existing law.
  • Police reported scuffles with demonstrators and a female officer injured, and activists, including Praveen Togadia, threatened wider agitation even as authorities kept the current admissions in place.
