Jammu & Kashmir Tightens Meat Safety With Border Check Posts and Mobile Testing Labs

Entry-point screenings, district testing laboratories, mobile testing vans, 30-day action plan have been introduced after authorities seized more than 11,000 kg of rotten, unlabelled meat in the Valley.

Overview

  • Authorities have seized and destroyed over 11,000 kg of rotten, unlabelled and adulterated meat in raids across Srinagar, Pulwama and other districts since late July.
  • Chief Minister Omar Abdullah ordered screenings at Lakhanpur and Qazigund, the setup of district testing labs and deployment of mobile testing vans as part of a 30-day enforcement plan to curb unsafe meat imports.
  • Srinagar Police and the Food and Drug Administration have identified suspects such as Abdul Hameed Kuchay, registered FIR No. 48/2025 and are probing upstream suppliers and illegal dumping sites.
  • Grand Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam issued a fatwa against the sale and consumption of forbidden meat and health experts have warned that broken cold chains and unauthorised additives pose serious foodborne-illness risks.
  • The enforcement drive has triggered public alarm, led to dumped consignments near roadsides and riverbanks, and caused a sharp drop in restaurant meat orders as consumer confidence wanes.
