After the seizure of dozens of quintals of rotten meat coming from outside the Valley in the past 10 days meant for various eateries across Kashmir , chief minister Omar Abdullah on Monday announced a slew of measures, including establishment of entry-point check posts and testing laboratories at gateway into J&K to screen mutton, chicken, and other perishable items entering the union territory. Overview

  • Authorities have seized and destroyed over 11,000 kg of rotten, unlabelled and adulterated meat in raids across Srinagar, Pulwama and other districts since late July.
  • Chief Minister Omar Abdullah ordered screenings at Lakhanpur and Qazigund, the setup of district testing labs and deployment of mobile testing vans as part of a 30-day enforcement plan to curb unsafe meat imports.
  • Srinagar Police and the Food and Drug Administration have identified suspects such as Abdul Hameed Kuchay, registered FIR No. 48/2025 and are probing upstream suppliers and illegal dumping sites.
  • Grand Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam issued a fatwa against the sale and consumption of forbidden meat and health experts have warned that broken cold chains and unauthorised additives pose serious foodborne-illness risks.
  • The enforcement drive has triggered public alarm, led to dumped consignments near roadsides and riverbanks, and caused a sharp drop in restaurant meat orders as consumer confidence wanes.
